Chapter 4

In this chapter I talk a great deal about the resolve of the heart as well as how God desires to have it.  Some pastors might disagree.  I’ve had some who like to point out the Scripture in Jeremiah 17:9 that speaks of the heart being “deceitful and wicked.” I adhere to the promise of God that he was going to give us a new, undivided heart. A wicked heart is one that has not been saved and transformed by God.

Our hearts, like the whole of our beings, are in the process of sanctification.  The Holy Spirit is constantly at work making us more like Jesus.

I’d also add that I grew up in a religious tradition that wasn’t very big on emotions or any part of our being that wasn’t our soul(spirit).  Their oversensitivity brings to mind the Gnostics who were religious heretics in the New Testament. Essentially there were two groups of Gnostics. One group felt like since the soul had been saved, it didn’t really matter what you did in the body.  The other group believed that the soul was good, but the body was bad, so they rejected anything that was not soul.

Jesus didn’t come into your life for you to be a robot with no emotion.  The passions were created by God.  Our drives are good, but tainted.  We can’t be ruled by emotions, but we’re not fully alive without them.  Jesus came to save our total beings, not just souls.  Just a reminder that when we are in a final perfected state that we will be a total being with a physical body, a heart & mind, and our soul/spirit.
